Back to Basics Fall Fundraiser

Editor's Note: Below Is A Special invite from James Giles, CEO of Back to Basics Outreach Ministry

Join us as we celebrate the achievements of those who have successfully completed our programs and have become productive and contributing members of society.  Each year, we come together to acknowledge the life altering changes that individuals undergo as a result of successfully completing our program.  We also recognize volunteers and activists who have played a significant role in our communities and whose on-going support and generosity has made it possible for us to continue to provide vital services. Our keynote speaker this year is Jeff Conrad, Erie County Director of the Center for Employment Opportunities.  We will have dinner, performances, and award presentations.
Our theme for this year’s banquet is “A New Day” taken from the scripture “Behold, all things have become new” 2nd Corinthians 5:17.  As a ministry, we endeavor to enter the trenches in order to demonstrate compassion and love toward those in need of support and guidance.  Program participants are simply asked to “strap in” as we accompany them on a transformative journey filled with life’s lessons and great achievements.  As this is our only fundraiser for the year, we ask for your unfailing support.
This year’s Banquet will be held on Thursday October 25 at Statler City, located at 107 Delaware Avenue, from 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM.  Included with this invitation is an ad form for you to complete if you or organization is interested in placing an ad in our souvenir journal. Please return completed ad form to our office by September 24. Ticket prices for the event are $50 for individuals or $500 for a table of 10.  Dinner will be served and there will be a cash bar from 6:00 to 7:30, as well as a silent auction. Jim Kelly's New Book

NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly is back in the spotlight, again, with the release of his newest book, "The Playbook for Dads." The entire Kelly family has released books in the last three years, thanks to a book deal with FaithWords, a division of Hachette Publishing one of the largest publishers in the world. FaithWords publishes books for the growing inspirational market. Based near Nashville, Tenn., FaithWords has grown dramatically by acquiring a solid list of faith-building fiction and high-profile authors with edifying messages, including best-selling authors Joyce Meyer, Joel Osteen, John Eldredge and David Jeremiah. Several FaithWords titles have appeared on national best-seller lists, most recently Every Day a Friday by Joel Osteen,Living Beyond Your Feelings by Joyce Meyer and I Never Thought I'd See the Day! by David Jeremiah.

Kelly in the book relays insider information on his toughest job, Kelly tackles 10 important lessons that fathers should be sharing with their children.

"Being a father is hard work," writes Kelly. "It's hard work just like being a quarterback was hard, relentless work . . . But I can honestly say that it's the greatest, most important job in the world."

Relating personal experiences on and off the Buffalo Bills field to fatherhood, Kelly walks fathers through his game plan, challenging them to coach their children through 10 important lessons: thankfulness, confidence, respect, preparation, passion, perseverance, character, responsibility, teamwork and spiritual life.

"It seems like many of these principles are fading away in our society, and I think it’s our job as fathers to preserve them and pass them along to our children," writes Kelly.

Each parenting lesson begins with a letter to his son Hunter, who passed away at age eight from Krabbe disease, and ends with a letter to his two daughters, Cam and Erin. Kelly shares details of his and his wife Jill's journey to Christianity after the passing of their son, and how that experience has changed their lives for the better - forever.

The book is available at Bender's Parable Christian Store and other leading retailers.

Jericho Road Calls for Healthcare Reform

Jericho Road Ministries has announced the formation of the Health and Justice Project in an effort to "advocate for systemic change in our nation's healthcare system" according to the ministries latest newsletter and an article by founder Dr. Myron Glick. According to Glick, "People of faith and good will should put aside their differences and with one voice say now is the time for all people to be treated with the dignity that God intended." Glick references seeing the pain and suffering of patients suffering from, for example, cancer or blindness or even lack of prenatal care for women and having no treatment because of fear of the expense and no medical coverage. Jericho Road is calling this type of injustice to our city's and nation's attention and calling for reformation of the system. The team at Jericho Road is posting stories weekly through the Health and Justice Project website at www.causes.com/causes/767047-health-justice-project.

Glick closes the article by stating, "In Isaiah 58 the prophet urges the people of God to share food with the hungry, provide shelter for the homeless, clothe the naked, and set free the oppressed. Then, the prophet promises, you will be restored...."

Home Renovation Projects Underway On Buffalo's West Side

Home renovations are nothing new for Western New York's Christian Community. Every year numerous work projects are done through Breakout and LoveBuffalo outreaches by suburban churches. In conjuction with this year's Rock The Lakes, crews of believers are once again at work to restore homes on Buffalo's West Side with the help of numerous churches and Jericho Road Ministries. Daryl Boss, Director of Xertion Youth wrote this on his Facebook page yesterday,

"Today volunteers began building a wheelchair ramp for a lady that cannot get out of her home except by crawling due to polio: today volunteers finished painting the home of a couple barraged by unemployment and sickness and as a result they both accepted Jesus as their Savior; today a home was sided by volunteers whose homeowner is neither physically or financially able to do it; today the materials were delivered for a roof project that will begin tomorrow for a pastor whose wife died of cancer 3 years ago and he has had three back surguries in the last 3 months; today a home was painted by volunteers for a woman whom had heart surgery a month ago; today 2 porches were built by volunteers for 2 young men that have committed their lives to helping others and were in need of assistance; today there were more projects that I have not listed yet, completed by volunteers. Where did all this happen, you say? On the west side of Buffalo. So I ask you, what did you do today? What are you doing tomorrow? I know hundreds of volunteers that are going to make a difference, that are going to change someone's life, perhaps forever. If you want in join us at 184 Barton St. in Buffalo, NY. We are there through Saturday."

James MacDonald To Speak in Buffalo September 16

Bestselling author, pastor, founder of the national Bible teaching ministry, Walk in the Word, and founder of Chicago-based Harvest Bible Chapel, James MacDonald, will embark on a forty-city tour beginning this August 2012.
The Vertical Church “Worship and the Word” tour, beginning August 8 in Minnesota and ending October 3 in Florida, is based on the releases of MacDonald’s forthcoming Vertical Church book (David C Cook, August) as well as the CD Live Worship From Vertical Church, which releases from Provident on July 31, 2012.
Each event, taking place in venues across the country, will consist of worship time with sets from the new CD performed by the Vertical Church Band as well as a message from Pastor MacDonald based on the Vertical Church book.

MacDonald says the problem with the church today is not that people don’t go to church like they used to, it’s that God doesn’t attend.

“There are astounding statistics that six thousand churches close their doors every year, thirty-five hundred Americans leave the church every day and only fifteen percent of churches are growing annually,” says MacDonald.

The solution to this failure, however, is less a solution and more of a change of perspective.

“We can’t survive spiritually without a corporate connection in heart, soul, mind, and strength with God. That’s what I mean by Vertical,” MacDonald writes, explaining the title of this new release. “To see a return to prevailing church in our day, in our land, we must see a return to Vertical Church.”
When the church, first and foremost, gives God glory (Vertical) then His glory falls upon the church, and everything else (Horizontal) falls into place.

“Vertical church is about faithfulness and fruitfulness…It’s about getting out of the various horizontal extremes, which excel at part of what church must be, but fail at the remaining priorities.”

“If churches begin again to more frequently and more universally resound with the adoration of Jesus and proclamation of God’s Word…it would revive the church and rock the world,” says MacDonald.

And, it all begins by worshiping vertically.

For more a list of cities and more information about the Vertical Church “Worship in the Word” tour, go to: www.verticalchurchtour.com

The Vertical Church tour will be in Buffalo, September 16

About James MacDonald

James MacDonald, from Ontario, Canada, is married to his high school sweetheart, Kathy. He is the father of three grown children, a daughter-in-law, a son-in-law, and four amazing grandsons. James’ ministry focuses on the unapologetic proclamation of God’s Word. In 1988, along with a small group of ministry partners, James and Kathy planted Harvest Bible Chapel outside Chicago, Illinois, which has grown to over 13,000 people each weekend, meeting in seven locations.

In 1997, a Bible teaching broadcast ministry called Walk in the Word was established, now reaching more than three million people weekly. In 2002, a church-planting ministry called Harvest Bible Fellowship was born and has given birth to more than 70 churches across North America and around the world. James’ vision is that God will use him to help plant 1,000 churches in the next 20 years.

James’ extensive ministry also includes a training center for pastors, a year-round camp, a biblical counseling center, and a Christian school—all used to reach more people with the life-changing message of the Gospel.

Now impacting millions of lives annually, God’s favor upon these ministries has been what James describes as “abundantly baffling.” The MacDonalds view these blessings as proof only that God still works through broken vessels to pour out His grace.

Church Participation in Rock the Lakes Down Since 1988

photo via nydailynews.com

600 churches partnered together to make the 1988 Billy Graham Crusade possible in Buffalo. Now nearly 25 years later the number of churches working together (at present time) is roughly a third of what is was in 1988. The reason remains unclear but there is speculation that the reasons may be of all things, political.

Supposedly some of Franklin Graham's comments regarding President Barack Obama may have contributed to certain predominately African American Churches not participating in supporting the event here in Buffalo. Because of the climate of the culture in 1988 these concerns were not an issue. As moral issues in our culture around faith, abortion and gay marriage have intensified Christian leaders have spoken out more clearly and boldly and rightly so on many occasions. While we are not taking any type of political position in this post, has the Church of the Lord Jesus in Buffalo put politics in front of the proclamation of the gospel? May it never be. Consider asking your pastor today (or Sunday) if your church is supporting this great effort to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ.

In this article Franklin Graham clearly apologized for any comments concerning Barack Obama but clearly states he disagrees with certain policy and stances on important moral issues.

Radio Swap

If your listening to Christian music in the Buffalo and surrounding suburbs you may have noticed a difference in your dial. That's because Reach FM, formerly broadcasting on 89.3 has made a trade with Family Life Network. FLN traded them 88.1 and 89.1 broadcasting out of Grand Island for 89.3 because according to sources FLN's signal was overpowering Reach FM. Nice to see Christian radio stations working together!

Brad Butler Named Chairman of the Board of The Buffalo Christian Center

Former Buffalo Bills guard and tackle, Brad Butler has been named Chairman of the Board of the Buffalo Christian Center, the 66,000 square foot ministry center located at 512 Pearl Street in Buffalo. Butler was drafted by the Bills in 2006 and retired after four seasons with the Bills. His closing statement upon announcing his resignation from his professional football career was, “I would like to thank Mr. Wilson, my teammates and the entire Bills Nation for giving me the opportunity to represent the Buffalo Bills for the past four years. Playing in the National Football League has been a tremendous opportunity and a great blessing. However, my passion for education, country and community is something that I am ready to devote my full attention to. I believe the best way to pursue these spheres of interest is to step away from the game of football at this point in my life. I will always remember my time spent in Western New York with great affection. I wish my teammates and Bills fans the best of luck next season and into the future.” Source: Wikipedia
Butler's goal now is to bring other board members together to assure the future viability of the giant ministry center in the heart of downtown Buffalo that houses ministries like The Buffalo Dream Center and Prayer Collective among others. The Center was founded by Alan Forbes in 1958.

We need you to pray for the churches, the pastors and the people to embrace this idea of search and rescue, pray that they will bring people who are not Christians to the Festival—that is at the top of our prayer list.” --Sherman Barnette

Kingdom Bound Off to A Great Start

Kingdom Bound is off to a great start thanks to a lineup of speakers including Tommy Reid and Jerry Gillis and of course the first night wouldn't be complete without a great worship concert by Casting Crowns. The band from Atlanta, GA are youth leaders when they aren't touring the country leading thousands into worship. Lead singer Mark Hall led a candlelight service of worship, singing many of the bands top songs while also sharing from his heart what he believes church is all about. Not the guitars, not the externals, but the person of Jesus Christ. "The gates of hell will not prevail," he reminded the large crowd. Hall also reminded the many attendees that just as the candles are lit, so we must remember to pray for our neighbors and share Christ with them. Casting Crowns is known for their stirring lyrics and intimate worship and tonight did not disappoint to a packed out crowd at Darien Lake's main stage.

Monday-Wednesday's schedule is posted at http://kingdombound.org/schedule.php
