The Student Association at the University of Buffalo has suspended campus ministry group, Intervarsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF) until further notice after former Intervarsity treasurer, Steven Jackson, stepped down amidst what is being reported as pressure from other leadership of Intervarsity because of his homosexual relational status. UB's independent campus newspaper reported, "All peripheral privileges afforded to Student Association clubs are revoked for Intervarsity Christian Fellowship until further notice," wrote SA Treasurer Sikander Khan in a Friday letter to the IVCF's executive board.
As of now, the Student Association is "investigating" whether it is "legal" for Intervarsity to require leadership to sign a "a faith-based agreement." According to the UB Spectrum the decision will be made after the semester break, extending the suspension into the New Year.
Intervarsity exists according to their website for, "Transforming lives by initiating or strengthening a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Renewing the UB Campus by sharing the Gospel and living as Christ is teaching us to live. Changing the World by developing leaders who can engage issues around the world." The ministry is also responsible for mobilizing students to actively participate in service projects and good deeds around the city, region and country. The group also serves students by forming small and large groups and events to encourage students in their walk of faith.
WIVB news reported UB Spectrum Senior News Editor saying if the club wasn't supported by the University no one would be making an issue of it. "If they weren't being funded by the Student Association, then no one would be raising this issue. But the fact is that they got $6,000 from the Student Association via the mandatory student activity fee, which every student that pays tuition, pays into," explained Hammill.
